The Miracle

A miracle does not depend
On the vicissitudes of people.
A miracle is the difference
Between a mathematical description
And the suchness of a thing.

The difference between an approximation
And an exactitude.
A leap across a chasm
From doubt to certitude.

From the ugliness of contingency
To the sweetness of the spirit.
From utter nothingness
To complete loveliness.

A miracle is the existence of anything
Much less a universe, planets and people.
A miracle is your life
And your interactions with other people.

A miracle is a man with no power
Who lived a short life
And died a criminal's death,
Who changed the world.

A miracle is when you realize
That existence is sacred,
That every hair is numbered
Like every grain of sand.
